Basic Framing Examples

These frames are based on the sizes I learned when working as a TV camera operator.

The purpose was to give us all (in a multi camera environment) the same references so we would get either matching or if not then shots that cut together.

A Long Shot or LS

A "Cowboy"

It cuts mid-thigh and is named after a common framing in westerns

A Mid-Shot or MS

It cuts at the waist

An MCU or Medium Close-Up

This cuts where the breast pocket in a jacket would be

A Close-up or CU

This cuts where the knot of a tie would be

A Big Close-up or BCU

This cuts at chin and hairline
